What works with SimplyPrint

Connected through SimplyPrint Client, SimplyPrint supports most of what it offers on the Dremel 3D40-FLX: the camera and AI failure detection, remote printing and AutoPrint. The Dremel 3D40-FLX doesn't let other software do these: skip objects, change temperatures, moving with the controls, homing, extrude and retract, change print speed, fan speed, baby stepping, send G-code, change filament, bed leveling and Z-Offset Calibration. Not yet in SimplyPrint through SimplyPrint Client: layer progress. Not available through SimplyPrint Client: download the file before the print starts.

What filament can the Dremel 3D40-FLX print?

Filament compatibility for the Dremel 3D40-FLX: the materials Dremel lists for it.

Filament Suitability Notes
PLA Great On the maker's list of materials for this printer.
PETG With care Marginal - PETG prefers a hotter bed (~70-80C) than this printer reaches.
TPU & flexibles Great The direct-drive extruder feeds flexible filament well. Print slowly for clean results.
ABS & ASA Not ideal Not recommended - the bed cannot reach the ~90-110C ABS and ASA need.
Nylon (PA) Not ideal Not recommended - nylon needs a hotter hotend (~250-270C) and ideally an enclosure.
Polycarbonate (PC) Not ideal Not recommended - PC needs very high hotend temps and an enclosed chamber.
Carbon-fiber & glass-filled With care Possible if you fit a hardened or wear-resistant nozzle - the abrasive fibers quickly wear a stock brass nozzle.

Tip: this is a general guide from the printer's specs - always check your filament's recommended settings. With SimplyPrint you can save a profile for each spool and track exactly what filament you have in stock.

When to choose the Dremel 3D40-FLX

Choose the 3D40-FLX if your school wants a quiet, enclosed PLA printer with an education bundle, and service that stays with Dremel: 3DPrinting.com rated it 5/5 for reliability and ease of use and called it suited to K-12. It is an older design (the 3D40 dates from 2016 and the FLX version from 2019), prints PLA only and 3PI Tech lists it from $1,499. If you need more materials within the Dremel family, the 3D45 adds a heated bed; for a larger plate and ABS or ASA, a modern enclosed printer such as the Creality K2 or Bambu Lab P2S gives far more.

Pros

  • Enclosed and quiet: 3DPrinting.com could hold a normal conversation right beside it.
  • A flexible magnetic plate that snaps on and lets prints pop off without tools (3PI Tech).
  • 3DPrinting.com rated its reliability, ease of use and PLA print quality 5/5, with few failed prints.
  • USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and it works with SimplyPrint through the SimplyPrint Client, where a teacher can approve student prints.

Cons

  • PLA only, with a 230 °C hotend; 3DPrinting.com rated its range of materials 1/5.
  • An older design: the 3D40 dates from 2016 and this version from 2019.
  • Expensive for what it does: 3PI Tech lists it from $1,499, and Dremel's own spools cost more than third-party ones (3DPrinting.com).
  • A small 255 x 155 x 170 mm build volume.

Who it suits

  • Schools Good fit

Enclosed, quiet, PLA-only and reliable without tuning, which is what a classroom needs; it costs more than its age and specs suggest.

  • Hobbyists Not a good fit

PLA only, small and expensive for a hobbyist; modern printers do far more for the money.

  • Businesses Not a good fit

One material and a small plate rule out most functional parts.

  • Print farms Not a good fit

Small, PLA-only and expensive per unit for a fleet.
