Dremel 3D40 at a glance
The 3D40 is Dremel's enclosed, PLA-only classroom printer from 2016, with a 254 x 152 x 170 mm unheated plate, assisted levelling, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. It is no longer sold new; 3PI Tech, which sells Dremel's printers under licence, offers the 3D40-FLX in its place, so it is mainly a machine schools already own.

Connected through SimplyPrint Client, SimplyPrint supports most of what it offers on the Dremel 3D40: the camera and AI failure detection, remote printing and AutoPrint. The Dremel 3D40 doesn't let other software do these: skip objects, change temperatures, moving with the controls, homing, extrude and retract, change print speed, fan speed, baby stepping, send G-code, change filament, bed leveling and Z-Offset Calibration. Not yet in SimplyPrint through SimplyPrint Client: layer progress. Not available through SimplyPrint Client: download the file before the print starts.

Automate the Dremel 3D40
There's no plate swapper or auto-ejection kit for the Dremel 3D40 in SimplyPrint yet, but AutoPrint can still keep it printing: once the plate is clear, it starts the next job from your queue.

The bed is unheated so it prints PLA only, using non-Dremel filament voids the warranty, homing is loud, and print quality is called adequate. A good enclosed choice around children.

When to choose the Dremel 3D40
Keep using a 3D40 you already have for simple, supervised PLA printing in a classroom: Make: found it polished, easy to set up and a good enclosed choice around children. Don't buy one now: since 2021 Dremel's DigiLab printers are sold by licensee 3PI Tech, which lists only the 3D40-FLX and the 3D45. For more materials on a larger plate, a modern enclosed printer such as the Creality K2 or Bambu Lab P2S is the better buy.
