One URL, two surfaces, zero confusion

Teacher & student dashboard

When a class of 30 students logs into SimplyPrint, they shouldn't see the same screen as the teacher running the lab. SimplyPrint's School plan ships a role-aware dashboard at /panel/dashboard that automatically renders a teacher control centre for staff and a clean, focused upload-and-queue page for students - all configurable from one settings screen.

Built for K-12, universities, libraries and makerspaces

The teacher / student split is part of the School plan - the same plan trusted by schools running everything from a single classroom printer to a full lab of fleets. Students get a friendly landing page they can use without training; teachers get a control centre with everything they need to approve, monitor and unblock the class.

The same URL, two completely different surfaces

When a user opens /panel/dashboard, SimplyPrint checks whether they're a teacher on that school account and renders the appropriate view. No role-switcher, no separate login - the right dashboard just appears.

Teacher view

Approvals, quota requests, queue, fleet status, bulletin.

Student view

Upload zone, own queue, bulletin, quick links, Academy.

The teacher dashboard: everything you need to run the lab

The teacher view is built around the classroom workflow: approve new students, grant quota when someone runs out, see which printers need attention, broadcast a message to the whole class - all without digging through menus.

What's on it: pending approvals (one-click approve / deny), quota requests inbox (grant, reply, notify), fleet status cards (next finish, idle, paused, attention, offline), pending print approvals surfaced on the dashboard, school queue, bulletin board.

The student dashboard: simple enough for day one

Students don't need a fleet overview - they need to upload a file, see their queue, and know who to ask for help. The student dashboard puts exactly those things front and centre.

What's on it: a big drag-and-drop upload zone that goes straight to the queue, the student's own queued / running / finished prints, teacher-curated quick links, a contact list of teachers and admins with name + photo + email + phone, the bulletin board (read-only), and a SimplyPrint Academy shortcut.

A shared bulletin board for the whole class

Teachers write, students read. Use the bulletin to announce a printer being down, a homework deadline, a new build plate, the day's open lab hours - whatever the class needs to know. The board lives on both dashboards, so a message posted by a teacher shows up the next time a student opens the panel.

Rich text, scheduled visibility, multiple messages pinned at once - it's a tiny CMS designed for the classroom, not a glorified Slack channel.

Configure both dashboards from one settings screen

Open Settings → Organization → School settings → Dashboards and pick exactly which widgets each side sees. Don't run a quota system? Turn off the quota-requests card on the teacher view. Don't use the bulletin? Hide it on both. Want students to skip the Academy CTA? One checkbox.

The system always keeps at least one widget enabled so the dashboard never goes blank, and ships sensible defaults so a fresh School account works on day one.

  • Teacher widgets: file upload, queue, bulletin, help, status cards, pending users, quota requests, pending approvals
  • Teacher status cards: next finish, idle, paused, ongoing, attention, pending, offline
  • Student widgets: file upload, queue, bulletin, academy, quick links, admins, help

Quick links and a curated "who to ask" list

Two admin power tools that turn the student dashboard from a generic landing page into something tailored to your classroom.

Highlighted + regular links

Big coloured buttons or a compact list, each with an FA icon.

See what students see - before you save

Hit the Preview button in settings and SimplyPrint opens a showcase-mode render of the student (or teacher) dashboard, exactly as a learner would see it. Change a widget, preview again, save when it looks right. No more "let me log out and log back in as a test student".

Students land on the dashboard the moment they log in

On a School account, non-teacher users get auto-redirected from the default landing page (printers / files) straight to /panel/dashboard. No "where do I click?" moment for first-time students - they open the panel and immediately see the upload zone. Teachers keep the standard landing flow.

A dedicated sidebar entry ( Dashboard) is added for both roles, so anyone can jump back to the dashboard from anywhere in the panel.

How a quota request actually flows, end to end

The student-to-teacher quota loop is four steps:

  1. Student hits "Request more quota" from their dashboard - either from the quota widget or the print-blocked modal when they hit their cap mid-job.
  2. Teacher sees it in their inbox widget on the teacher dashboard - thumbnail, current usage, the student's note about why they need more.
  3. Teacher grants (with optional note) or denies (with reason) in one click. They can grant the exact amount the student asked for, or override it up or down.
  4. Student gets a notification in-app and by email, with the teacher's note attached. If denied, the reason text is included so the student knows what to do next.
The whole loop usually takes a teacher under 30 seconds per request. Pair with school quotas and balance for the full picture.

Plan access: which plan ships the teacher / student dashboard?

The dual teacher / student dashboard is a School-plan exclusive. It's part of the wider Education feature set: classroom-shaped permissions, quotas, an Academy with custom courses, SSO, bulletin boards and more - all included, no per-seat surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

On a School account, every user is either a teacher (the teacher flag is set on their company membership) or a student (every other non-admin user). There's no separate student role to assign - if someone isn't a teacher or admin, they're a student by default. Admins and account partners are treated as teachers for dashboard routing.
Yes. Each dashboard (teacher or student) has its own master Enabled toggle in Settings → Organization → School settings → Dashboards. Turn one or both off and users on that role will land on the standard printers / files page instead.
The dashboard's queue widget shows the student's own queued items. The full school queue (with everyone's items) lives at /panel/queue and is permission-gated - so you control whether students can see only their own prints or the whole class.
No - the bulletin is a teacher-to-student broadcast. Students see messages but can't author or edit them. This keeps it a clean announcement channel, not another social feed.
The request appears in the Quota requests widget on the teacher dashboard (also embedded in settings). A teacher can grant a specific amount, deny it, reply with a message, and optionally notify the student. Resolved requests collapse into a history list so the inbox stays focused on what's pending.
No. The dashboard works with any sign-in method - native SimplyPrint accounts, Google sign-in, or full SSO (SAML / Unilogin). SSO is a separate School-plan benefit that lets you import classes automatically; the dashboard works either way.
Yes. In Settings → Organization → School settings → Dashboards, hit the Preview button next to either dashboard. SimplyPrint opens a showcase-mode render of that dashboard with your live widget configuration, exactly as the chosen role would see it.
The teacher / student dashboard is exclusive to the School plan (marketed as Education). It's bundled with the wider classroom feature set - quotas, queue approval, Academy custom courses, SSO and more - at no extra cost. See the pricing page for full School plan details.
