Looking for OctoFarm alternatives?

OctoFarm was the open-source way to run a print farm built on OctoPrint: one dashboard pulling many OctoPrint instances into a single view, with filament tracking, job history and multi-camera monitoring. It was a genuinely useful, much-loved community tool, and if you self-host it on an all-OctoPrint fleet, it still works.

The catch is that it has wound down. Its last stable release was October 2022, and in 2023 the lead maintainer opened an issue asking for new maintainers. SimplyPrint has been running print farms since 2020 and is the maintained, cloud-native platform farms move to: every major printer brand connects directly (no OctoPrint required), with a print queue, AutoPrint, AI failure detection, a full cloud slicer, filament and maintenance tools, native apps and SSO. Here's a fair, side-by-side look.

Best known for Print farm
The bottom line

OctoFarm was the go-to open-source dashboard for stitching many OctoPrint instances into one print-farm view. It's free, self-hosted and was genuinely useful, but development has stalled: its last stable release was October 2022, the project publicly asked for new maintainers in 2023, and the original website no longer resolves to the project. If you're running a farm on it today, you're running it on unmaintained software, and that's the honest reason most farms eventually move on.

SimplyPrint is a maintained, cloud-native farm platform that has been running print farms since 2020. It manages OctoPrint just like OctoFarm did, and also talks to Bambu, Klipper/Moonraker, Prusa, Marlin (incl. USB) and Duet directly, with no OctoPrint required. On top of monitoring it ships a print queue with staggered start, AutoPrint for continuous lights-out printing, AI failure detection and AI bed-check, a full interactive cloud slicer, filament inventory with NFC and label printing, a maintenance system, native iOS and Android apps, SSO and 2FA, all actively developed and supported. If OctoFarm got your farm started, SimplyPrint is the maintained successor it can grow into.

Maintained vs. abandoned

A print farm runs on its software the way a workshop runs on its machines: it has to keep working, get patched, and have someone home when something breaks. OctoFarm's last stable release was in October 2022, and the project has openly asked for new maintainers. We say this respectfully, it was a beloved community tool, but it's the fact that matters most when you're choosing what to run a business on. SimplyPrint ships updates continuously and has supported real farms since 2020.

Active development
SimplyPrint
Shipped to and improved continuously, with a real team and roadmap behind it.
OctoFarm
Last stable release was October 2022 (betas ended December 2022); a "looking for maintainers" issue was opened by the lead in April 2023.
Support when it matters
SimplyPrint
Chat, email and phone support, plus an actively maintained help centre.
OctoFarm
Community-only, and the community has largely moved on. There's no vendor to call when a farm goes down.
The project today
SimplyPrint
Live, maintained product with a stable home and continuous releases.
OctoFarm
The original octofarm.net no longer resolves to the project; the canonical home is now just the GitHub repository, which hasn't shipped a stable release since 2022.
OctoFarm earned its place, but it is no longer actively maintained. For a working farm, that's the single most important difference: SimplyPrint is a maintained platform with a team and support behind it, built to keep your farm running.

Direct printer support vs. an OctoPrint per machine

OctoFarm is a layer on top of OctoPrint: it has no printer connection of its own, so every machine in your farm must already be running its own OctoPrint instance (typically a Raspberry Pi per printer). SimplyPrint connects to most printers directly, OctoPrint included, so there's no per-printer middleware to build and babysit.

How printers connect
SimplyPrint
Bambu, Klipper/Moonraker, Prusa, Marlin (incl. USB/serial) and Duet connect directly, and OctoPrint works too. No per-printer host required.
OctoFarm
OctoPrint only. Every printer must first be running its own OctoPrint instance; there's no native Klipper, Bambu, Prusa, Duet or Marlin-over-USB support.
Klipper & Bambu farms
SimplyPrint
Klipper/Moonraker and Bambu Lab connect natively, with full control and camera.
OctoFarm
Only reachable if you run OctoPrint in front of them; Bambu and direct Klipper farms aren't a supported path.
Infrastructure to run
SimplyPrint
Nothing to host: it's a managed cloud platform. On-prem self-hosting is available as an Enterprise option on request.
OctoFarm
You self-host the OctoFarm server (Node.js + MongoDB) and an OctoPrint instance per printer, and you keep all of it patched yourself.
If your fleet is already all-OctoPrint, OctoFarm gives you a single view of it. But the OctoPrint-per-printer requirement is real overhead, and it rules out Bambu, direct Klipper and USB machines. SimplyPrint runs OctoPrint and the rest of the market directly.

Running the farm, not just watching it

OctoFarm is monitoring and management: dashboards, history and webcam feeds. That's useful, but a busy farm also needs to keep printers fed, catch failures and be reachable from anywhere. This is the breadth OctoFarm never set out to cover.

Queue & continuous printing
SimplyPrint
A print queue with staggered start, plus AutoPrint for continuous, lights-out runs.
OctoFarm
No print queue, no staggered start and no continuous-printing automation. It watches the farm; it doesn't run it.
AI & cloud slicing
SimplyPrint
AI failure detection (with optional auto-pause/cancel), an AI bed-check, and a full interactive cloud slicer.
OctoFarm
No AI of any kind and no slicer; you prepare files in a separate desktop slicer.
Remote access & apps
SimplyPrint
Cloud access from anywhere out of the box, with native iOS and Android apps, SSO and 2FA.
OctoFarm
LAN-only by design; remote access means running your own VPN or port-forward, and there are no mobile apps.
For monitoring an all-OctoPrint fleet, OctoFarm did the job. For actually running a farm, queueing work, printing unattended, catching failures and reaching it from your phone, SimplyPrint is a different class of platform.

OctoFarm and SimplyPrint comparison

Nothing is black-and-white, and there are always pros and cons to consider when choosing a 3D printing cloud solution!
And we're not here to simply tell you, that SimplyPrint is the best - we want you to make an informed decision, and of course there are pros of using OctoFarm as well!

Pros of using OctoFarm

OctoFarm earned a loyal following, and its strengths are worth being honest about:

  • Free & open-source: AGPL-licensed and completely free to use; the only cost is self-hosting.
  • Fully self-hosted & local: it runs entirely on your own server (Node.js + MongoDB) on your LAN, with no cloud and no third party in the loop, ideal if local-only is a hard requirement.
  • Great for an all-OctoPrint fleet: if every printer already runs OctoPrint, it gives you one dashboard for the lot, with filament tracking, job history and multi-camera monitoring.

Cons of using OctoFarm

Where OctoFarm falls short for a working farm today:

  • No longer actively maintained: its last stable release was October 2022 and the project asked for new maintainers in 2023, so you're depending on unmaintained software.
  • OctoPrint-only: every printer must run its own OctoPrint instance; there's no native Bambu, Klipper, Prusa, Duet or Marlin-over-USB support.
  • Self-host everything yourself: you run and patch the server and an OctoPrint per printer; nothing is managed for you.
  • LAN-only: no built-in cloud or remote access (you'd run your own VPN/port-forward), and no native mobile apps.
  • Monitoring, not automation: no print queue, no staggered start, no continuous-printing automation and no AI.
  • No slicer, SSO, maintenance system or filament NFC/label printing.

OctoFarm vs. SimplyPrint: frequently asked questions

Is OctoFarm still maintained?

Not actively. OctoFarm's last stable release was version 1.7.3 in October 2022 (beta builds ended in December 2022), and in April 2023 the lead maintainer opened a "looking for maintainers" issue after stepping back. The original octofarm.net website no longer resolves to the project. It was a genuinely useful, much-loved community tool, but if you depend on it for a working farm, you're relying on unmaintained software, which is the main reason farms move to a maintained platform like SimplyPrint.

What's the best OctoFarm alternative for a print farm?

SimplyPrint is the closest maintained successor. It does what OctoFarm did, managing many printers from one dashboard with filament tracking, job history and multi-camera monitoring, and adds what OctoFarm never had: a print queue with staggered start, AutoPrint for continuous lights-out printing, AI failure detection, a full cloud slicer, a maintenance system, native iOS and Android apps and SSO. It has run print farms since 2020 and is actively developed.

How do I migrate from OctoFarm to SimplyPrint?

There's no lock-in to unwind. You can connect printers to SimplyPrint directly (Bambu, Klipper/Moonraker, Prusa, Marlin incl. USB, Duet) or keep your existing OctoPrint instances and connect those, so you can move printers over at your own pace rather than all at once. Because SimplyPrint is cloud-managed, there's no OctoFarm server to keep running once you've switched, and nothing to host, patch or back up yourself.

Do I still need OctoPrint if I switch from OctoFarm to SimplyPrint?

No. OctoFarm only works on top of OctoPrint, so every printer had to run its own OctoPrint instance. SimplyPrint connects to Bambu, Klipper/Moonraker, Prusa, Marlin (including over USB) and Duet directly, and still supports OctoPrint if you already run it. You can keep your existing OctoPrint setup or move printers to a direct connection whenever you like.

Is SimplyPrint free like OctoFarm?

OctoFarm is free open-source software, but you pay for it in self-hosting: a server running Node.js and MongoDB, plus an OctoPrint instance per printer, and your own time keeping it all patched. SimplyPrint has a free plan for 2 printers with every feature, then flat, volume-discounted paid plans as your farm grows, with no servers to run and no maintenance burden on you.

Can SimplyPrint be self-hosted like OctoFarm?

SimplyPrint is a managed cloud platform, so there's nothing for you to host, patch or back up, which is the point: your farm's software stays online and supported without you running infrastructure. On-prem self-hosting is available as an Enterprise option on request. If open-source self-hosting on your own LAN is your single hard requirement, OctoFarm (or a newer OctoPrint-style project) still fits that niche, but none give you a maintained cloud platform with apps, AI and a slicer the way SimplyPrint does.

Conclusion
Why SimplyPrint is the Top OctoFarm Alternative

We made SimplyPrint due to the fact, that nothing else on the market quite fit our needs. We wanted a platform that was easy to use, but still had all the features we needed. We wanted a feature-rich platform, intuitive and easy to use, with a great user experience and actual innovation within the 3D print management software space.

In summary, we - humble and unbiased as we are 😉 - believe that the SimplyPrint platform is a great OctoFarm alternative!
