Before You Start: Custom Firmware

Your Anycubic Kobra requires custom firmware to work with SimplyPrint.

We know that sounds technical — and it is one of the more involved setups — but we've worked hard to make it as straightforward as possible.

Why is custom firmware needed?

Some printer manufacturers don't provide an easy way for platforms like SimplyPrint to communicate with their printers. The community has developed alternative firmware that unlocks these capabilities.

Is this safe?

Yes! The firmware is developed by active communities, can typically be removed, and preserves your printer's core functionality. You can usually roll back or factory reset if needed.

A note about warranty

Some manufacturers may consider custom firmware a warranty modification. The risk is low — to date, we haven't had a single known case of a SimplyPrint user damaging their printer or being denied warranty repair because of this setup.

That said, it's ultimately your choice to proceed.

Estimated time: 15–30 minutes

We'll guide you through every step.

Welcome to the Anycubic Kobra setup guide for SimplyPrint!

In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to connect your Anycubic Kobra to SimplyPrint using Rinkhals, a custom firmware that enhances functionality while maintaining stock Anycubic features.

This guide is inspired by the excellent work of jbatonnet. For the latest updates and more detailed information, please visit the official Rinkhals GitHub repository.

Supported Printers

This guide currently supports the following Anycubic Kobra models:

  • Kobra 3 (+ combo). Tested firmware versions: 2.4.4.7, 2.4.5, 2.4.6.7.
  • Kobra 2 Pro. Tested firmware versions: 3.1.2.3, 3.1.4. Only with motherboard Trigorilla Spe B v1.0.x. Note: firmware version 3.1.4 is known to be buggy for some people. Read more on the Rinkhals repository.
  • Kobra S1 (+ combo). Tested firmware versions: 2.6.0.0, 2.7.0.9.
  • Kobra 3 Max (+ combo). Tested firmware versions: 2.5.1.3, 2.5.1.7.
  • Kobra 3 V2 (+ combo). Tested firmware versions: 1.1.0.1, 1.1.0.4.
  • Kobra S1 Max (+ combo). Tested firmware versions: 2.1.6, 2.6.6.

What about the Kobra X?

The Kobra X is not currently supported by Rinkhals. While some firmware packages are publicly available, Anycubic changed the underlying software on the Kobra X from the GoKlipper base (used in the Kobra 3 series) to a new C++ Klipper port, making it fundamentally different from the printers Rinkhals currently supports. On top of that, the Kobra X requires a trusted certificate for firmware updates, which prevents the SWU-based installation method that Rinkhals relies on. Until these challenges are resolved, Kobra X support is not expected.

Other newer Kobra printers not listed here may also not yet be supported, but could be in the future.

Is your printer not supported?

If your Anycubic Kobra printer is not listed above, it may not be compatible with Rinkhals yet. Check back later: Newer Kobra models may be supported in the future. For updates, visit the Rinkhals GitHub repository. Using another printer? It may still be compatible with SimplyPrint using serial printing (OctoPrint setup) or a regular Klipper setup. Go back to the SimplyPrint setup guide and see other supported methods.

Installing Rinkhals

The recommended way to install Rinkhals is using the Rinkhals Installer, which adds a management interface directly on your printer's touchscreen. For the full guide with screenshots, see the Rinkhals quick start guide. There's also a video walkthrough by Kanrog Creations covering the setup on the Kobra S1.

  1. Download the Rinkhals Installer:
  • Head to the Rinkhals GitHub releases page.
  • Download the installer file (install-*.swu) for the latest release.
  • Rename the downloaded file to update.swu.
  1. Prepare the USB drive:
  • Format a USB drive as FAT32 with MBR partition scheme (GPT is not supported).
  • Not sure how to format a USB drive? Right-click the drive on Windows and select "Format". On macOS, use Disk Utility and select "Erase" with FAT32 as the format.
  • Kobra 3 series, S1, S1 Max, 3 Max, 3 V2: Create a directory named aGVscF9zb3Nf on the USB drive and place update.swu inside it.
  • Kobra 2 Pro: Create a directory named update on the USB drive and place update.swu inside it.
  1. Run the installer:
  • Plug the USB drive into your printer.
  • Wait about 10 seconds for the printer to detect the installer.
  • Kobra 2 Pro only: Go to Settings > More settings > About this machine and tap the orange arrow next to the version number.
  • On the printer's touchscreen, navigate to Update > Rinkhals > Manage.
  • Select the Rinkhals version you want, tap Download, then tap Install.
  • Tip: If the version list is empty, make sure LAN-only mode is turned off on your printer so it can download the files.
  • The printer will reboot once the installation is complete.
