Flashing firmware

Good news: Breaking the appendix seal won't void your warranty, so you are free to flash custom firmware.

However: Since there is no way for Prusa to verify or test every single custom firmware on the internet, they disclaim liability for any kind of damage or harm a printer with a broken seal may cause (e.g. in case of a fire). So, proceed at own risk and don't mindlessly flash suspicious files!

Why custom firmware, and what is different?

As the newer Prusa printers / mainboards are more powerful, with internet capabilities, allowing us to connect to it directly!

But, as the normal Prusa firmware is made to connect to the PrusaConnect cloud, we've had to make custom firmware to allow us to connect to our own servers instead.

Our firmware is 99% normal Prusa firmware, with a few small patches applied by our team, to connect it to our servers, and fix some small inconveniences.

The SimplyPrint firmware for Prusa printers is open source, and can be found here; https://github.com/SimplyPrint/printer-prusa-firmware.

How to install the firmware
  1. Download the firmware for your printer, by clicking one of the buttons below.
  2. Breaking the appendix: physical firmware "lock" on the mainboard
    • On the Prusa "buddy" mainboards, there is a physical part of the mainboard that has to (and is meant to) be broken off.
    • This is to ensure people are aware they're flashing custom firmware and understand the potential risks involved.

      • Turn off and unplug the printer
      • Open the electronics box, by unscrewing the screws
      • You may need to move the power switch to be able to access the appendix
      • To break it off, you can use a pair of pliers, and just break it off.
Be careful not to break anything else!
  3. Flashing the firmware
    • Put the downloaded firmware file on a USB stick, and plug it into the printer
    • Turn on the printer
    • While the printer is turning on, click the "Reset" button repeatedly when the booting screen shows
    • When the "Firmware version [X] is available" screen shows, click "Flash"
    • It will say "Warning! Firmware signature validation failed".
This is because it's not official Prusa firmware, but our custom firmware.
      Click "Ignore" to continue.
    • Now it will say "Flashing" for a while, but when done, the "Original Prusa" logo that shows, should now have a blue color, indicating that it's our firmware!

That's it! You're all set

You're now ready to connect your printer and start using SimplyPrint.
