The app and platform for writing OpenPrintTag tags

OpenPrintTag in the filament manager

OpenPrintTag is Prusa's open NFC standard for filament: rewritable, vendor-neutral and built to work across brands. SimplyPrint reads and writes it everywhere - iPhone, Android and desktop - so you can tag any spool and have it recognized without being tied to one company's ecosystem.

An open standard, fully supported

OpenPrintTag is meant to be free of lock-in: any brand can adopt it and any tool can read or write it. SimplyPrint treats it as a first-class standard, reading and writing it on every platform - so the data you put on a spool stays with that spool, wherever it goes.

What OpenPrintTag is

OpenPrintTag is an open NFC standard from Prusa for storing filament data on a tag. It's rewritable and vendor-neutral, built on NDEF and ICODE SLIX, so it isn't tied to any single brand of printer or filament. New Prusament spools ship with an OpenPrintTag already on them, and you can write your own to any spool you like.

How to use OpenPrintTag with SimplyPrint

Three steps from a blank tag to a spool your printer recognizes.

Add or pick your spool

Add any spool to your SimplyPrint inventory, or grab a new Prusament that already ships with an OpenPrintTag written.

Write the tag

Write the OpenPrintTag from the SimplyPrint iPhone or Android app, or the desktop NFC Agent with an iCode SLIX2 reader. SimplyPrint encodes the spool's brand, material and colour for you.

Tap and print

Tap the tagged spool to identify it in a second, assign it to a printer, and let usage deduct itself automatically as you print.

Create an OpenPrintTag for any spool

OpenPrintTag is vendor-neutral, so you don't have to buy Prusa filament to use it. Write an OpenPrintTag to any spool you own in SimplyPrint and any OpenPrintTag-aware printer or tool, including Prusa printers, can read exactly what's loaded.

Read and write on every platform

OpenPrintTag is NDEF-based, so it works on iPhone, Android and the desktop NFC Agent alike - no MIFARE limitations here. On desktop, reading OpenPrintTag's ICODE SLIX tags needs a reader that supports them, like the ACS ACR1552U; the NFC Agent is the only method that handles ICODE SLIX.

Tap a tagged spool, see it instantly

The desktop reader identifies the spool in seconds

Hold a tagged spool to a USB reader running the SimplyPrint NFC Agent and the matching spool comes straight up - brand, material, diameter and remaining weight - ready to assign to a printer or view in full. No typing, no searching your inventory by hand.

Open standard, no lock-in

Because OpenPrintTag is open and vendor-neutral, what you write isn't trapped in one company's app. Tag a spool once and any OpenPrintTag-aware tool - including SimplyPrint - can read it. That's the whole point of an open standard: the spool carries its own identity, not a vendor's.

Ships on new Prusament, tracked automatically

New Prusament spools arrive with an OpenPrintTag already written, so SimplyPrint can pull the spool's identity straight away. From there, usage is deducted automatically from the G-code of every print you start - so the remaining weight on the record stays accurate without a scale.

How automatic tracking works

OpenPrintTag is not OpenSpool

It's easy to confuse the names, but these are separate standards. OpenPrintTag is Prusa's standard built on NDEF and ICODE SLIX; OpenSpool is a community DIY standard using NDEF on NTAG tags. SimplyPrint supports both, so you don't have to choose - but they're not interchangeable.
