## What filament can the Sovol M1D print?

Filament compatibility for the Sovol M1D: the materials Sovol lists for it.

| Filament | Suitability | Notes |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| PLA | Great | On the maker's list of materials for this printer. |
| PETG | Great | On the maker's list of materials for this printer. |
| TPU & flexibles | Great | On the maker's list of materials for this printer. |
| ABS & ASA | With care | The bed is hot enough, but ABS and ASA warp without an enclosure, which is strongly recommended for clean prints. |
| Nylon (PA) | With care | Possible with care - an enclosure and very dry filament are essential. |
| Polycarbonate (PC) | With care | On the edge - PC really wants an enclosed, hot chamber to avoid warping. |
| Carbon-fiber & glass-filled | With care | Possible if you fit a hardened or wear-resistant nozzle - the abrasive fibers quickly wear a stock brass nozzle. |

## What reviewers say about the Sovol M1D

- [Sovol M1D In-Depth Review: IDEX + 6-Tool Changer 3D Printer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHxx4_c6y38) (Aurora Tech, August 19, 2026): In-depth test of the M1D's fixed toolhead plus six-tool changer, with PLA, PETG, PA-CF, ABS and TPU settings listed in the description. Links to the Sovol Kickstarter (affiliate link, disclosed). Verdict not confirmed.

## When to choose the Sovol M1D

Choose the M1D Essential when you want several colours or materials in a single job (for example PLA with TPU or PVA supports) and mostly print PLA, PETG and TPU, the materials Sovol recommends for the open version. It is new and unproven: the page we rely on is a pre-order page and the only review we hold is a video that does not state a verdict. If you want ABS, ASA, nylon or PC, the M1D Advanced adds the enclosure and chamber heating. If you simply want multi-colour with less to go wrong, a filament-changer printer such as the Bambu Lab P2S with AMS is the safer, proven pick.

### Pros

- One fixed toolhead plus six tool-changing toolheads give up to seven colours or materials in one print (Sovol).
- Each toolhead heats on its own and a swap takes as little as five seconds, so there is little purge waste (Sovol).
- Auto-calibration with cameras, eddy-current bed levelling, filament run-out, clog and tangle detection, and a chamber camera with time-lapse (Sovol).
- Copy and Mirror modes print two identical or mirrored parts at once (Sovol).
- Up to 600 mm/s and 10,000 mm/s² with a 300 °C hardened-steel nozzle (Sovol).

### Cons

- Open frame with no chamber heating; Sovol recommends only PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA for this version.
- The full 300 x 300 mm plate is for single-toolhead use; printing with all seven toolheads is limited to 240 x 300 x 350 mm.
- We hold no confirmed SimplyPrint connection method for it yet (Klipper and OctoPrint are both unknown), so check before relying on it.
- A pre-order product with no independent hands-on verdict yet; reliability of the toolchanger is unproven.

### Who it suits

- Schools: Not a good fit. Open frame with seven heated toolheads and a moving changer is not what a classroom needs, and we cannot confirm a SimplyPrint connection for queue approval yet.
- Hobbyists: Good fit. Seven colours or materials with little purge waste is the draw, though it is a new, unproven machine.
- Businesses: Can work. Useful for multi-material prototypes in PLA, PETG and TPU, but unproven and without an enclosure.
- Print farms: Not a good fit. Complex toolchanger, no track record and no confirmed SimplyPrint connection make it a weak fit for unattended fleets.

## About Sovol

Sovol is a Chinese 3D printer maker founded in 2018 that sells low-cost printers and publishes their designs. Its SV08 is a lower-cost derivative of the open-source Voron 2.4, released with its structure, electronics and firmware files, and most current models run Klipper. Its buyers are mainly hobbyists who like to tinker.

- Founded: 2018
- Website: https://www.sovol3d.com

Openness: Open (4.3 of 5)

Sovol is among the most open brands: its printers are standard Klipper machines on open designs, with published files and no cloud. The trade-off is less hand-holding: Tom's Hardware found its larger printer needs experience to tune.

- Firmware and custom firmware (4 of 5): Sovol publishes firmware source on GitHub; for the SV08 under GPL-3.0 together with structure files and motherboard designs. Newer repositories, such as the SV08 Max, carry no licence file. Sovol says damage caused by modified or third-party firmware voids its one-year warranty and that it does not help with modifying the source. <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/klipper> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08MAX>
- Local control and integrations (5 of 5): The SV08 family runs Klipper with the Mainsail interface on the local network, so other software can use Moonraker's documented API. Tom's Hardware drove the SV08 from Mainsail, listed 'doesn't require the cloud', and found 'vanilla Klipper' on the SV08 Max. We found no Sovol cloud service or account requirement. <https://www.tomshardware.com/3d-printing/sovol-sv08-review> <https://www.tomshardware.com/3d-printing/sovol-sv08-max-review> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08> <https://moonraker.readthedocs.io/en/latest/external_api/introduction/>
- Third-party filament, slicers and parts (4 of 5): Built on open designs and Klipper, so any filament can be used; Sovol supplies OrcaSlicer profiles, and Tom's Hardware notes the SV08 also works with Cura or PrusaSlicer using Voron settings and takes Bambu-style nozzles. Hotends and extruders are Sovol parts, sold in its store. <https://github.com/Sovol3d/Sovol-OrcaSlicer> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08> <https://www.sovol3d.com/collections/fdm-parts>
- Repairs and spare parts (4 of 5): Sovol's store sells parts per model (hotends, extruders, fans, eMMC modules, heated beds), and the SV08's full CAD and motherboard files are public, so parts can be identified or made. <https://www.sovol3d.com/collections/fdm-parts> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08>
- Community and documentation (4 of 5): Strong overlap with the Voron community, which Sovol supports with a donation programme, public GitHub repositories and a wiki; Sovol does not give technical help for modifying the source. <https://www.sovol3d.com/pages/about-us-1> <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08> <https://wiki.sovol3d.com/en/HOME>

### Pros

- Standard Klipper with Mainsail on the local network, no account or cloud.
- SV08 structure, electronics and firmware files are published.
- Spare parts sold per model, and open designs make parts easy to source.
- Low prices for Voron-style machines.

### Cons

- Damage caused by modified or third-party firmware voids the one-year warranty.
- Sovol does not help with modifying its source code.
- Tom's Hardware found the SV08's default slicer profiles very conservative and says the SV08 Max needs an experienced hand to tune.
- Newer repositories (SV08 Max, Zero) have no licence file.

### Track record

- July 2026: Sovol launched the M1D, an open-source IDEX printer with a tool changer, on Kickstarter, where it passed $2.8 million in pledges. <https://www.tomshardware.com/3d-printing/sovol-m1d-3d-printer-is-the-first-open-source-idex-design-with-an-integrated-tool-changer-seven-heads-for-quick-swapping-materials-with-two-fully-independent-nozzles>
- March 2024: Sovol released the SV08, a lower-cost derivative of the Voron 2.4, and published its structure, hardware and firmware files on GitHub under GPL-3.0. Sovol says it set up a donation programme with the Voron Design team. <https://github.com/Sovol3d/SV08> <https://www.sovol3d.com/pages/about-us-1>
