## Connect the Markforged Mark Two to SimplyPrint

| Way of connecting | Status | What you need | Notes |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| The maker's cloud | Possible, not built yet | | Cloud-only printer: it prints from Markforged's Eiger platform, which has an API. SimplyPrint can build support through that API if enough people vote for it. ([Source](https://markforged.com/3d-printers/mark-two)); [Not built yet: if enough people want it, we'll build it. Vote for the suggestion](https://suggestions.simplyprint.io/891) |
| SimplyPrint Client | Not compatible | | Runs Markforged's closed firmware and takes jobs only through Eiger, Markforged's own cloud. ([Source](https://s3.amazonaws.com/mf.product.doc.images/Datasheets/F-PR-2027.pdf)) |
| Klipper (Moonraker) | Not compatible | | Runs Markforged's own closed firmware and prints from Eiger; no Klipper or Moonraker is documented. ([Source](https://s3.amazonaws.com/mf.product.doc.images/Datasheets/F-PR-2027.pdf)) |
| OctoPrint (Directly, over USB) | Not compatible | | Runs Markforged's own closed firmware and prints from Eiger; no OctoPrint or serial control is documented. ([Source](https://s3.amazonaws.com/mf.product.doc.images/Datasheets/F-PR-2027.pdf)) |

## What slicer to use for the Markforged Mark Two

The Markforged Mark Two prints only from Markforged's own slicer, Eiger, so none of the slicers in SimplyPrint's cloud can slice for it.

## What reviewers say about the Markforged Mark Two

- [Review: Markforged Mark Two – a champion of composite 3D printing](https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/review-markforged-mark-two-a-champion-of-composite-3d-printing-211627/) (3D Printing Industry, July 12, 2022, 79/100): Benchmarked the dual-nozzle desktop printer on its own test model and real application parts: it passed every print test and scored 79/100, and carbon fiber raised tensile strength about sixfold. Downsides were manual-only bed leveling, accuracy dropping on larger parts and Eiger hiding some print parameters.
  > "If you have $19,990 to shell out on a capable piece of kit, we strongly recommend the Mark Two." - Kubi Sertoglu, 3D Printing Industry
- [The Carbon Fiber Printer: Markforged's Mark Two review!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClLW4Ti5kQ4) (Made with Layers (Thomas Sanladerer), January 18, 2017): Thomas Sanladerer tests the original Mark Two, which lays continuous fiber inlays together with high-performance nylons to make parts that compete with metal, and asks whether that is too good to be true.

## When to choose the Markforged Mark Two

Choose it when you need continuous carbon fiber, Kevlar or HSHT fiberglass reinforcement on a desktop. The Onyx Pro only does fiberglass; if you need a larger bed, laser calibration or automatic leveling, the X7 is Markforged's step up.

### Pros

- Reinforces parts with continuous carbon fiber, fiberglass, HSHT fiberglass or Kevlar.
- Prints Onyx, nylon, Precise PLA and Smooth TPU 95A.
- 3D Printing Industry's tests found it passed every print test and measured a 6.15x strength gain from carbon fiber.
- Fully enclosed, with a 4-inch touchscreen.
- Removable print bed that goes back with 10 µm repeatability.

### Cons

- Not supported by SimplyPrint yet: it can be built on Markforged's cloud API if enough people vote for it.
- Runs Markforged's closed firmware with Eiger, so there is no OctoPrint or Klipper route.
- Small build volume of 320 x 132 x 154 mm.
- Bed leveling is manual, with three thumbscrews.

### Who it suits

- Schools: Can work. Enclosed with a touchscreen, and Markforged targets education, but the cloud-only workflow suits engineering courses more than general classes.
- Hobbyists: Not a good fit. Built for professionals, with closed firmware and no third-party route.
- Businesses: Good fit. 3D Printing Industry strongly recommended it for reliable fiber-reinforced parts.
- Print farms: Not a good fit. One small bed with manual leveling, and SimplyPrint cannot manage it today.

## About Markforged

Markforged is an American maker of industrial 3D printers, founded in 2013 near Boston, known for nylon parts reinforced with continuous carbon fibre and for metal printing. Printers, materials and its cloud software Eiger are sold together as one closed platform to manufacturers, defence and aerospace. Nano Dimension bought it in April 2025, and in May 2026 agreed to sell it to Stratasys.

- Founded: 2013
- Headquarters: Waltham, Massachusetts, US
- Ownership: Subsidiary of Nano Dimension since April 2025; sale to Stratasys agreed in May 2026, still pending in August 2026
- Website: https://markforged.com

Openness: Walled garden (1.3 of 5)

Closed by design: proprietary firmware, Markforged-only materials and cloud slicing, for industrial buyers who want one supported, secure system.

- Firmware and custom firmware (1 of 5): Closed firmware, updated over the air through Eiger; no source is published and no custom firmware is supported. <https://markforged.com/3d-printers/fx10>
- Local control and integrations (1 of 5): Markforged printers are sliced and run through Eiger, its cloud software, by default, and Eiger is the only slicer they accept. Sites that cannot use the cloud can pay for Offline Eiger, which works over USB or a private network. APIs for linking other enterprise systems come with Eiger Fleet, a paid cloud subscription. We found no local interface for other software. <https://markforged.com/3d-printers/fx10> <https://markforged.com/resources/blog/keeping-3d-printing-software-up-to-date-when-offline> <https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/markforged-launches-eiger-fleet-software-to-unlock-distributed-manufacturing-at-scale-196189/>
- Third-party filament, slicers and parts (1 of 5): Markforged printers use only Markforged materials (Onyx, continuous fibres, metals) and only Eiger for slicing. <https://markforged.com/3d-printers/fx10> <https://markforged.com/materials>
- Repairs and spare parts (2 of 5): Replacement print heads, extruders and nozzle parts are sold through Markforged resellers, mostly as assemblies (a Mark Two print head lists at over 1,400 pounds), and some come free under service ('Success') plans. <https://hawkridgesys.com/product/markforged-desktop-fiber-extruder> <https://www.additive-x.com/shop/mark-two-enterprise-print-head.html>
- Data and privacy (3 of 5): Eiger accounts hold your parts library and print jobs on AWS, encrypted, with two-factor login and ISO 27001 certification, and the privacy policy says what is collected. Offline Eiger keeps the data on site. <https://markforged.com/security> <https://markforged.com/privacy-policy> <https://markforged.com/3d-printers/fx10> <https://markforged.com/resources/blog/keeping-3d-printing-software-up-to-date-when-offline>

### Pros

- Prints parts reinforced with continuous carbon fibre, Kevlar or fibreglass, strong enough to replace some machined parts.
- One supported system: printers, materials and software from one company, with ISO 27001 certification.
- Offline Eiger available for sites that cannot use the cloud.
- The FX10 prints both composites and metal.

### Cons

- Only Markforged materials and the Eiger slicer; no third-party filament.
- Cloud first: the offline option is a separate subscription.
- Ownership in flux: bought by Nano Dimension in 2025, with a sale to Stratasys pending in 2026.
- Layoffs in 2023 and a $25 million patent settlement in 2024.
