faq:
  - q: What temperature should I print PLA at?
    a: |
Most PLA prints with the nozzle between 190 and 230 °C and the bed between 50 and 65 °C. Each filament's page
gives its maker's range; start in the middle and adjust for your printer.
  - q: Is expensive PLA worth it?
    a: |
Sometimes. A dearer PLA often holds its diameter and colour better from spool to spool, which matters most
when you print the same part many times. For a one-off model, a well-known budget PLA prints just as well.
  - q: Does PLA need a hardened nozzle?
    a: |
Plain PLA doesn't. PLA filled with carbon fibre, glass fibre, metal or glow powder is abrasive and wears a
brass nozzle: use a hardened one for those.

PLA is the filament most people print most of the time: it prints at low temperatures, barely warps and needs no enclosure. With hundreds of PLA lines on sale, the best PLA filament is the one that prints reliably, comes in the colours you need and is easy to buy again. This guide ranks every PLA line in the [Open Filament Database](/open-filament-database) on exactly that, with something no other ranking has: what SimplyPrint accounts actually keep on the shelf and print with.

## What makes a PLA good

### Consistency over the spec sheet

A spool that holds its diameter prints the same first layer every time. The spec sheet rarely says how consistent a filament is; how many people keep buying it says more, which is why usage carries the most weight here.

### Colours you can buy again

If a part has to match last month's, the colour has to be on sale next month. A brand with many colours, sold by shops near you, is a safer choice than a one-off.

### A profile in your slicer

A ready-made profile from the slicer's maker or the filament's maker saves the tuning. Each filament page lists which slicers have one, and SimplyPrint's online slicer has them built in.
