tldr: |
Bambu Lab's own filament is the seamless choice in an AMS: its RFID tag sets the material and colour by itself.
Plenty of other filament feeds just as well. This guide ranks both on what SimplyPrint accounts actually print on
Bambu Lab printers, RFID tags, ready-made Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer profiles, and shops you can buy from.

faq:
  - q: Can I use third-party filament in the Bambu Lab AMS?
    a: |
Yes. Rigid filament on a spool that fits the AMS feeds fine; you set the material and colour of the slot by
hand, or SimplyPrint keeps track of the spool for you. Soft TPU and abrasive fibre-filled filament are the
      exceptions to check first.
  - q: Do I need Bambu Lab filament for the AMS?
    a: |
No. Bambu Lab filament is the most convenient, because the AMS reads its RFID tag, but it isn't required.
  - q: Does cardboard-spool filament work in the AMS?
    a: |
Often, though cardboard spools can shed dust and slip in the AMS rollers. Many people print an adapter ring or
respool. The Open Filament Database doesn't record spool material yet.

The Bambu Lab AMS feeds up to four spools into one printer, and the filament in it matters more than in a single-spool printer: it has to slide through tubes, unload cleanly and fit the AMS. Bambu Lab's own filament is the seamless choice: the AMS reads its RFID tag, so material and colour set themselves. It's far from the only choice. This guide ranks the filament that works in an AMS on what SimplyPrint accounts actually print on Bambu Lab printers.

## Getting the most from an AMS

### RFID, or SimplyPrint keeping track

The AMS reads Bambu Lab's tags by itself. For any other spool, SimplyPrint keeps track of what is in each slot and how much is left, and [syncs with the AMS](/features/filament-management/nfc/bambu-lab) so you see every spool in one inventory.

### Keep it dry

The AMS isn't sealed. Hygroscopic filament (PETG, and TPU, PA and PVA above all) picks up moisture in it: dry it, and store it with desiccant.

## How we choose

- How many SimplyPrint accounts print it on Bambu Lab printers: 30 points
- A Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer profile of its own: 20 points
- Bambu Lab RFID, read by the AMS: 15 points
- Sold by a shop we link to: 15 points
- How many SimplyPrint accounts stock and print it: 10 points
- Colours to choose from: 10 points
